Cobb advances 2028 SPLOST , sets community meetings

MARIETTA — On Tuesday, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved the preliminary list of projects to be funded through the county’s 2028 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). The 5-0 vote kicks off a series of nine community engagement meetings scheduled for January through March. The open houses will allow residents to review projects, ask questions of county staff and provide feedback before the commissioners finalize the package April 28. Voters will decide whether to approve the six-year tax, which would begin collections in 2028, in November. Cobb County currently levies a 6% sales tax. Four percent goes to the state, 1% funds an education SPLOST that goes to the Cobb and Marietta school districts and the remaining 1% is a county SPLOST. The current county SPLOST began collections Jan. 1, 2022, and will sunset Dec. 31, 2027. It was originally projected to collect $750 million but has already surpassed that estimate. As of a Nov. 20 county report, collections totaled $801.5 million. In November, voters will decide whether to approve a continuation of the 1%, six-year tax. If approved
