Cook County temporarily restricts outdoor burning due to drought conditions

COOK COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) – Cook County officials have implemented a temporary restriction, effective Feb 16., on outdoor burning in response to severe drought conditions threatening the safety of county residents. The new ordinance aims to reduce the risk of wildfires and protect public health and property during this period of extreme dryness. Cook County has experienced prolonged dry weather that has significantly increased the risk of wildfires and the rapid spread of uncontrolled fires, officials said. Open burning of yard debris poses a serious threat to public safety, property and natural resources during periods of extreme drought. To protect the health, safety and welfare of its citizens, the Board of Commissioners has enacted temporary burning restrictions. Officials said, effective immediately, all open burning of yard debris is prohibited in the unincorporated areas of Cook County. This includes: No person is permitted to ignite or allow the burning of yard debris outdoors except as specifically outlined in the exemptions below.
