After tariff ruling , farmers urge restraint as Trump vows new tariffs

While a U.S. Supreme Court ruling has struck down President Donald Trump’s broad tariffs, it quickly became clear that the trade uncertainty Iowa and U.S. farmers and manufacturers have experienced is unlikely to end. Some Iowa and national farm and business groups urged the president following the Friday, Feb. 20, ruling to pursue new trade deals rather than seek ways to reinstate tariffs on the country’s biggest economic partners. But by mid-afternoon, Trump had taken to Truth Social to rail against the decision and announce he would pursue a 10% global tariff under a different legal authority “over and above our normal tariffs already being charged.” Trump imposed tariffs on all major U.S. trade partners soon after beginning his second term. He’s called them vital for U.S. economic and national security. But the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision said he had exceeded his authority by invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 as the basis for his action.
