Old law , new brewery cause Cobb County to change popular voting location

Cobb County voting location will not be available for the May 19 primaries after election officials determined it sits within 250 feet of a newly opened brewery, running afoul of a Georgia law dating to the post-Prohibition era. The Smyrna Community Center, known for its easy access and high voter turnout, cannot be used as a polling place because of its proximity to StillFire Brewing, according to Cobb County election officials. Georgia Election Code O.C.G.A. § 3-3-20 prohibits alcohol from being served within 250 feet of a polling place. The law was originally enacted in the 1930s and has since undergone numerous modifications. The conflict came as a surprise to the Cobb County elections board. During a March 16 board meeting, members learned the site could no longer be used. “So, now we can never use that as a voting site?” asked board member Stacy Efrat. “Until the law changes, that is correct,” interim Elections Director Michael D’Itri said.
