Wildfires are continuing to burn across southeastern Georgia, with officials warning that drought-stricken conditions and limited rainfall are allowing fires to spread quickly. One of the state’s largest blazes—the Highway 82 fire in Brantley County—has rapidly escalated in recent days. Brantley County Manager Joey Cason issued a stark warning to communities that the blaze had “doubled in size” overnight, in a video published on Facebook on Sunday. In the meantime, a separate large-scale fire—the Pineland Road fire near Georgia’s border with Florida—remains only minimally contained, according to state and local authorities, including the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC). The fires are part of a broader regional outbreak affecting Georgia and northern Florida—where, according to the Associated Press, 150 other wildfires have been reported during an unusually severe spring fire season.
