ECHOLS COUNTY, Ga. (WCTV) – The Georgia Department of Transportation awarded a $5.5 million contract to replace the Culpepper Road bridges over the Alapahoochee river and overflow in Echols County. The bridges are southwest of Statenville and were built in 1961, according to GDOT. Because of their age, they were designed using a vehicle standard that is below the current standard, which would allow for heavier vehicles to use the bridge. This award is in addition to the five previously announced Southwest Georgia contracts for infrastructure improvements for Colquitt, Turner, Irwin and Ben Hill Counties. Through traffic will be detoured during construction. GDOT said information on the start of construction and the detour route will be announced ahead of the closure.
