The Banks County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate who was in custody at the Banks County Detention Center. According to Sheriff Carlton Speed, the death occurred on August 18, 2026. The Sheriff said he has requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to conduct an independent investigation into the death. The name of the inmate has not been released, the Sheriff said, out of consideration for the deceased’s family and as they are still notifying next of kin. The Sheriff added that no further information is available at this time, but it will be released later as it becomes available.
