Augusta mayor-elect outlines priorities, listens to constituents

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) — Mayor-elect Steven Kendrick will take office in January and is preparing to lead Augusta. He spoke to the Rotary Club about his plans for the city. Kendrick said Thursday that economic stability is his top focus. He also outlined his transition committee and its subcommittees, which are working on priorities before he takes office. The Georgia Department of Transportation awarded multiple contracts for projects on Interstate 520, Mike Padgett Highway and State Highway 88. “We’re not waiting until January to decide to start to listen and start to put together plans. My promise was to do it. We’ve started right now,” Kendrick said. Kendrick said downtown road work is hurting businesses. He pledged to look for ways to ease the impact while modernization continues, with more conversations planned over the next several months. The mayor-elect is hosting a series of community engagement sessions. The second session is scheduled for tonight at 6 p.m. at the Henry Brigham Community Center. The sessions give community members an opportunity to share their vision for the city with the new administration. Another session is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 24, at 6 p.m. at Julian Smith Casino. The final session is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 27, at 6 p.m. at Warren Road Community Center. Copyright 2026 WRDW/WAGT. All rights reserved.
