Augusta mayor orders flags at half-staff to honor Charles Walker

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Mayor Garnett L. Johnson has ordered all flags at city facilities to be lowered to half-staff in honor of former Georgia State Senator Charles W. Walker Sr. Flags will be lowered to half-staff beginning Monday at 8 a.m. and will remain at half-staff through Wednesday at 8 a.m. He was first elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1990, and made history in 1996 when he became the first African American to serve as Majority Leader of the Georgia State Senate. He served in that body for more than a decade. “Senator Charles Walker was a trailblazer whose influence extended far beyond the halls of the State Capitol,” said Johnson. “He understood the importance of representation, economic opportunity and ensuring that Augusta had a strong voice in Atlanta. His historic service as Georgia’s first African American Senate Majority Leader opened doors and demonstrated what was possible for generations who followed. Augusta is grateful for his service, his advocacy and the lasting impact he made on our city and state.” Copyright 2026 WRDW/WAGT. All rights reserved.
