Alpharetta council weighs North Point Mall rezoning tied to NHL arena

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Alpharetta City Council was still meeting Monday night to consider a proposal to rezone North Point Mall, a decision that could pave the way for a mixed-use district and potentially bring an NHL team back to Georgia. An Atlanta developer wants to transform North Point Mall into an entertainment district with apartments, hotel rooms, restaurants and a 20,000-seat arena intended to host an NHL expansion team. The development hinges on a hockey commitment. If the rezoning is approved, an NHL franchise would need to commit to Alpharetta by August 2031 for the full project to move forward. More than 70 staff-written conditions are attached to the proposal, but those provisions would not come into play if the NHL does not select Alpharetta. Dozens of people remained at Monday night’s meeting. The council amended its procedural rules to allow what was described as unlimited public comment. The meeting had not yet reached the public-comment portion, and it remained unclear when council members would make a decision. Copyright 2026 WANF. All rights reserved.
