Glascock County school leaders propose 2026 property tax increase

GIBSON, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Glascock County school leaders are moving forward with a plan that will amount to a 3.79% property tax increase over the state-defined rollback millage rate for 2026. For 2026, the school system is actually lowering its current millage rate from 14.538 mills to 13.698 mills. However, because the calculated rollback rate is below 13.698 mills, state law treats the difference as a tax increase and requires public notice and hearings. Richmond County property owners won’t see a school tax rate increase this year, according to the Richmond County Board of Education. The Board says the adopted school budget requires a millage rate higher than the rollback rate to fund operations, even with the slight rate reduction. Under Georgia law, before the final millage rate can be set, the school board must hold three public hearings. Those dates include: All hearings will take place at 738 Railroad Avenue in Gibson. All citizens are invited to attend and share their views before the school board sets the final 2026 school tax millage rate. Copyright 2026 WRDW/WAGT. All rights reserved.
