Tifton man arrested, charged with murder in deadly apartment shooting

TIFTON, Ga. (WALB) — A Tifton man is behind bars, charged with murder in connection with a deadly shooting that left one man dead and two others injured in late August. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) arrested 21-year-old Javious Taylor Thursday, Sept. 3. He faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The charges stem from an Aug. 29 shooting near the Wildwood Apartments in the 1100 block of Milton Drive. At around 10 p.m. that night, Tift County 911 dispatchers got calls reporting shots fired in the area. When Tifton Police Department (TPD) officers arrived, they found 23-year-old Michael Benefield of Tifton dead inside a car at the complex. He had suffered an apparent gunshot wound. A man and a woman were also injured in the shooting. They were taken to Tift Regional Medical Center, where they were treated and released. Taylor was booked into the Tift County Jail after his arrest. The Tifton Police Department asked GBI for help with the death investigation, which remains active and ongoing. Once the GBI’s investigation is done, the case file will be turned over to the Tift Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
