Tragic Shootout Involving Combat Veteran in Coweta County District Attorney Herb Cranford has revealed that Daniel Olson, an Army veteran killed in a shootout with a Coweta County deputy on January 8, 2026, had severe mental health issues linked to his military service. Olson, a former Army sniper who served for ten years, was medically retired after suffering a traumatic brain injury from a hand grenade in combat. COWETA COUNTY, Ga. – Mental health struggles stemming from military service likely played a role in a deadly shootout between a decorated Army veteran and a Coweta County sheriff’s deputy earlier this month, according to District Attorney Herb Cranford. Daniel Olsen, a former Army sniper and Purple Heart recipient, was killed Jan. 8 after he allegedly opened fire on a deputy, who then returned fire.
