ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A dead bat tested positive for rabies over the weekend, according to the DeKalb Public Health Department. The animal was found Friday in the Tilly Mill Road area, the department said. Last month, DeKalb officials reported a positive rabies test from a dead bat in the Stone Mountain area. Residents should make sure their pets are up to date on their vaccines and contact DeKalb County Animal Control if their pets show unusual behavior. Anyone who has been bitten or scratched by an animal should seek medical attention immediately. County health officials said Georgia is a rabies-endemic state, meaning the virus is present all year long, so it is not unusual for the county to report several rabies cases each year. For more information or to report any animal bites in DeKalb County, you should contact DeKalb County Animal Control at (404) 294-2996, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, or (404) 294-2519 after hours.
