Effingham County students return to school with new supply rules, cell phone policy

EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – Effingham County students are beginning the 2026-27 school year Wednesday with a new set of supply requirements and policies issued by district leaders. District leaders released the 2026 school supplies list alongside several updated policies. Water bottles must be clear or transparent and plastic only. Metal cups will not be allowed. For three-ring notebooks, school leaders strongly recommend plastic rings for faster entry through metal detectors. Standard metal binders are allowed but not recommended. Only clear plastic or nylon mesh book bags are permitted. Book bags made of other materials will be confiscated. Under Georgia’s Bell to Bell Law, all students are required to keep electronic devices — including cell phones and smartwatches — stored in their book bags during bell-to-bell hours. The law is intended to reduce distractions throughout the school day. School officials are reminding drivers that Effingham County school buses are equipped with stop arm cameras. Drivers who fail to stop for a school bus could face a minimum $1,000 fine. Copyright 2026 WTOC. All rights reserved.
