Posted by Staff Reports | Nov 5, 2026 | Gordon News | 0 | Gordon County’s latest sales tax collections showed year-over-year growth, although long-term revenue gains are beginning to flatten as local motor fuel tax collections reach the maximum allowed under state law. During the latest Gordon County Board of Commissioners meeting, officials reviewed September sales tax figures showing that Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) and Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) collections increased more than 8.5% compared to the same period last year. Despite the increase, longer-term revenue growth has leveled off, largely because of Georgia’s statutory limit on local sales taxes collected on motor fuel. Under state law, local motor fuel sales taxes are capped once retail gasoline prices reach $3 per gallon. With that threshold reached, Gordon County is currently collecting the maximum amount permitted under the law, meaning the local tax collected on each gallon of gasoline is at its highest level in the county’s history. Meanwhile, Georgia’s state motor fuel tax remains suspended. Gov. Brian Kemp’s latest extension of the state gas tax suspension is scheduled to expire at 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 30. The combination of local tax limits and the continued suspension of the state gas tax remains an important factor in the county’s overall revenue picture.
