OLNEY, Md. — After swastikas and an antisemitic slogan were painted onto a sign at the entrance of a synagogue in Montgomery County, police said Wednesday they were looking for a possible suspect or suspects. Three signs in Olney were defaced with the slogan “AZAB,” including the engraving at the Shaare Tefila — Hebrew for “Gates of Prayer” — entrance on Georgia Avenue. The vandalism happened overnight between Monday and Tuesday, according to the Montgomery County Department of Police. Officers were called to the area at around 8 a.m. on Tuesday. A sign saying “hate has no home here” in six languages was also vandalized, as well as a sign that reads “we support Israel,” according to photos shared by the synagogue. Rabbi Jonah Layman, who has led the congregation since 1994, said he was alerted to what happened by State Sen. Chris Zucker, who attends the synagogue. The state senator’s son had apparently spotted the graffiti while riding to school. Layman called the vandalism a “tragic irony” since one of the signs had been promoting coexistence. “We respect and love everybody in the community and to have (the sign) defaced is just unbelievable,” Layman told WUSA9 on Wednedsay.
