DEARING, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – One person has died and three more were taken to an Augusta hospital Monday evening after a head-on crash near Dearing, according to the McDuffie County Coroner’s Office. McDuffie County Coroner Paul Johnson has identified the victim as 78-year-old Geneva Cumpton, of Harlem. The wreck happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday on Highway 221 and Rachel Road, officials said. Georgia State Patrol troopers say a a 2014 Nissan Rogue was traveling north on Highway 221 approaching the intersection with Radford Gay Road, while a 2016 Nissan Altima was traveling south on Highway 221. Troopers say the Nissan Rogue traveled onto the east shoulder of the roadway and lost control while attempting to re-enter the travel lane. The Rogue then crossed into the southbound lane and into the path of the Altima, resulting in a head-on collision. Johnson says Cumpton was a passenger in the Nissan Rogue. She was pronounced dead on the scene at 7:23 p.m., according to Johnson. An autopsy is scheduled for later this week. Copyright 2026 WRDW/WAGT. All rights reserved.
