Old buildings at Milledgeville Youth Development Campus to be torn down – The Union-Recorder

Published 7:00 am Friday, August 28, 2026 The Milledgeville Youth Development Campus will undergo demolition of several old buildings, followed by construction of a new 48-bed facility, The Union-Recorder has learned.  The new facility will increase the number of juvenile offenders it holds by some 40 offenders.  Trey Allen, director of communications with the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice, confirmed such information with the newspaper last Wednesday.  “This project will replace outdated infrastructure with modern facilities that enhance education, safety and youth rehabilitation.” Allen said the new facility will include a new dining hall, classrooms and a sizable recreation area — all of which are designed to align with current juvenile justice best practices. “These improvements will create an environment where our young people can improve their lives,” Allen said. The new facility will also result in an increase in staff at the local facility. The demolition and new construction will also mean additional local jobs, Allen said. The announcement follows a recent executive order signed by Gov. Brian Kemp. The order calls for several older buildings to be torn down. The Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice’s Milledgeville Youth Development Campus has only about eight juveniles.  When the new facility is completed, it will house up to 48 juveniles. “That will be the limit,” Allen said.
