Overturned tanker blocks DeKalb County road, leaks fuel into waterways

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A fuel tanker overturned in DeKalb County on Friday morning, blocking a road and leaking into nearby waterways, according to the fire department. Browns Mill Road is closed in both directions at White Circle as crews respond to the accident, which is expected to cause significant traffic delays. According to DeKalb County Fire Rescue, the tanker was carrying about 7,500 gallons of diesel fuel, prompting a hazmat team response. Runoff is entering a storm drain and a large pond. Several groups, including the Environmental Protection Agency, Georgia State Patrol and the gas company Valero, have been notified. The fire department said the cleanup is expected to be an “extended operation.” DeKalb County schools in the area could see bus delays, and the fire department also notified officials in the nearby Rockdale County. It’s unknown what caused the tanker to overturn, but the fire department said the driver wasn’t hurt. This is a developing story. Check back with Atlanta News First as we learn more.
