SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – The Savannah Police Department announced school zone cameras will be reactivated starting Monday, Aug. 3 for the first day of school in the Savannah-Chatham County school district. For the first two weeks, the department said it plans to issue warnings, but as of Monday, Aug. 17, citations with fines will be issued for those violating speed limits in these areas. Cameras will start operating 45 minutes before the school day starts, and will stay active until 30 minutes after school dismissal. Savannah Police said the limits will only be active on school days, so no citations will be issued on holidays, weekends or emergency closure days, like in the case of a storm. Based on Georgia law, the speed limits will be enforced for every 10 miles per hour over the school zone limit. When the school zone limit is not in effect, speed limits will be enforced for every 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. Fines cost $75 for a first violation and $125 for a second or any following violations. There may be additional costs associated with the electronic processing fees which should not be higher than $10. Citations are considered civil, not criminal, so no points would be placed on a driver’s record, and insurance is not affected. Copyright 2026 WTOC. All rights reserved.
