South Carolina lawmakers consider closing party primaries

Sumter County Republican party. “When 14% of the population participated in the last primary, why would we freeze out independents? Don’t we want greater voter participation?” said Nicole Sanchez, Better Ballot South Carolina. Governor Henry McMaster opposes both bills. Lawmakers did not hold a vote on either of the bills. “If these bills and I believe they do impose obstacles to people voting easily and freely, then I’ll veto them,” said Gov. McMaster. House GOP leaders said the debate has created a divide in the party. Unless they reach a full consensus, they will not pass anything this year.
