AMERICUS, Ga. (WTVM) – Sumter County Schools will begin the 2026-2027 school year Thursday, with families attending open house events Monday night to meet teachers and tour campuses ahead of the first day. The district enters the new year with a new superintendent, Jerry Sanders, who said he has a clear vision for the direction of Sumter County Schools. “My top priority is Tier One instruction, climate and culture, and customer service,” Sanders said. “Those are my three initiatives that I’m pushing. I believe with those three things being the top three priorities of mine and my particular administration here at Sumter County — we will lead Southwest Georgia in educating students.” Sanders said several new safety initiatives are already in place for the upcoming school year, including metal detectors at main entrances, a weapon detection system, and a crisis alert system.
