Now, her family is speaking out — determined to make sure her death was not in vain. Her aunt, Paige Day, says the bullying began as early as fifth grade but intensified throughout Ava’s entire sixth grade year. Despite repeated attempts by Ava’s parents to get the school to intervene, Day says the response from Peach County Schools was consistently underwhelming. “When her parents went up to the school, I think really all that was done was some stern talking-to to the children that were doing it,” Day said. “Ava had told me one time that they had gotten silent lunch, but other than that, there were no other repercussions that we were aware of.” Peach County Schools has a three-page bullying policy that outlines a range of disciplinary steps administrators are expected to take when bullying is reported.
