TUCKER, Ga. — The Tucker City Council at its Aug. 10 meeting unanimously approved emergency funding of up to $221,972 to fix a sinkhole that has opened up on Windsong Way, endangering the only point of road access for at least five homes. The contract will go to Southern Premier Contractors, which can get shovels in the ground by the end of this week, said Tucker Public Works Director Ishri Sankar. The sinkhole appeared to happen after a stormwater pipe failed and a lake of runoff water that connected to the pipe completely drained. “It failed very quickly,” Sankar said. In a 2023-25 audit, the city listed the pipe network’s condition there as “fair.” When someone reported an issue at the site on July 20, city workers went out that day. They saw land damage – which has worsened – and could see inside the pipe. A joint between pipe parts had separated and parts were caving in. By now, around the sinkhole, the retaining wall has completely separated and, in places, crumbled. Near the road, the curbs are cracking and the earth is raised above the curb. “That's generally not a good sign,” Sankar said. “That means water is getting in and infiltrating and really decaying the roadbed at this point.” The impact on the surrounding area prompted staff to request the expensive repair as an emergency. Tucker residents are encouraged to take part in a survey for the city to develop a strategy around the Americans With Disabilities Act. The link to take part…
