BROOKS COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday night in Quitman. According to the GBI, at approximately 7:56 p.m. on July 24, the Brooks County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a home in the 300 block of Redwood Lane in Quitman. The caller reported an armed and intoxicated man was threatening to kill his wife and others at the location. As Brooks County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived at the residence, Georgia State Patrol troopers and Georgia Department of Public Safety Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers also responded to assist. Deputies and troopers approached Mark Alderman, 58, of Quitman, who was outside the home when they arrived. Alderman refused to comply with verbal commands and raised a long gun toward the deputies and troopers before firing at them. Several troopers returned fire, striking Alderman multiple times. No deputies or troopers were injured. Law enforcement officers provided life-saving efforts on scene before Alderman was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Alderman’s body will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy will be conducted. The GBI was requested to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
