ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A north Georgia public safety department is going high-tech to fight crime and enforce the law. White County Public Safety recently announced that it has purchased a new drone, which will help the county located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains in various ways, including finding missing people and responding to emergencies. The drone is an upgrade from previous drones enlisted by the county. The new drone is equipped with FLIR (forward-looking infrared) thermal imaging, allowing crews to detect heat signatures in darkness, smoke and thick tree cover. An improved live loudspeaker lets responders speak calmly and clearly to rescue subjects before crews get there. The drone is also rain-capable, keeping missions going when older county drones would have been grounded. Smaller police departments around Georgia are investing in drones as a way to improve response times, enhance officer safety and act as a force multiplier amid staffing shortages.
