ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The suspended sheriff of a north Georgia county is due in court Monday morning. Towns County Sheriff Kenneth Henderson is currently awaiting trial on a felony indictment directly connected to body camera videos uncovered by Atlanta News First Investigates. Henderson was suspended last year following ANF’s initial report of a physical confrontation between Henderson and a local police officer. The Georgia Sheriffs’ Association sent Gov. Brian Kemp a link to the Atlanta News First report when calling for an initial investigation. Henderson’s initial indictment was withdrawn earlier this year after his defense attorney found one of the grand jurors living across the border in North Carolina. A new Towns County grand jury indicted the sheriff on identical charges in May. Atlanta News First Investigates published body camera footage last year that is still not public record because of pending criminal cases. Obtained exclusively by Atlanta News First Chief Investigator Brendan Keefe, the videos showed the sheriff shoving and arresting Hiawassee Police Officer José Carvajal at the scene where a deputy had been shot in December 2024. Carvajal had accidentally picked up the deputy’s gun, leading to the sheriff accusing him of tampering with evidence. Deputies on scene verbally criticized the sheriff’s behavior, according to the videos. Henderson is still the elected sheriff of Towns County. Listen to Behind the Investigation on your favorite…
