More than 1,000 Fulton County early voting ballots to be rescanned due to equipment problems

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — More than 1,000 Fulton County early voting ballots are set to be re-scanned due to equipment problems, according to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. In a 10 a.m. Election Day update, Raffensperger said voting machines were taken out of service due to errors. He doesn’t expect the process to delay any race results. “It’s one of those things that can happen,” he said. In an email to the Secretary of State’s Office, Fulton County Director of Registration and Elections Nadine Williams said two scanners experienced equipment failures. The first was on Oct. 21 at the Mechanicsville Library, when a wheelchair user accidentally rolled over a power cable, causing the scanner to shut down. That incident impacted 361 ballots. Conley Recreation Center on Oct. 26, when a scanner showed a paper jam error despite there being no jam. According to Williams, 708 ballots were cast on that scanner. According to Williams, staff will begin the new tabulations after the polls close at 7 p.m., assuming the Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections approves the operations at its 6:30 p.m. board meeting.
