Former Coweta County deputy, school resource officer indicted on child molestation charges

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A former Coweta County Sheriff’s Office deputy and school resource officer has been indicted on child molestation charges, according to court records. Mike McGuffey faces three counts of child molestation and two counts of enticing a child for indecent purposes. A grand jury indicted McGuffey recently. According to court documents, McGuffey allegedly touched the leg of a female child under the age of 16, placed his mouth on her face, and convinced her to meet him in a gas station parking lot and a wooded area for indecent purposes between 2019 and 2020. Coweta County Schools officials confirmed that McGuffey was working as a school resource officer at Smokey Road Middle School at the time they launched an internal investigation in 2025. McGuffey resigned from the sheriff’s office last year while under investigation for allegedly making inappropriate comments to several female students. A report from the Georgia Peace Officer Standards & Training Council shows McGuffey worked in local law enforcement for 35 years. Prior to the allegations, the agency had no record of previous investigations while he was working as a police officer or sheriff’s deputy. Copyright 2026 WANF. All rights reserved.
