MACON, Ga. (WGXA) — Middle Georgia is mourning the loss of former Macon mayor and longtime public servant George Israel, who died on Sunday. In a statement to WGXA on Monday, Israel's granddaughter, Greta O'Hara, confirmed his passing at age 78. Israel was elected to serve as Macon's mayor from 1979 to 1987. During his tenure, Mayor Israel oversaw the early beginnings of the Cherry Blossom Festival in 1982, a tradition now in its fifth decade and plays a significant role in Macon’s economic and cultural growth. The Macon native also worked as Georiga Chairman on former President Ronald Reagan's campaign from 1983 to 1985, according to his LinkedIn profile. Once leaving office, Israel entered the private sector, becoming Chairman of the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce and later President and CEO of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce from 2002 until his retirement in 2010. In a statement, Macon Mayor Lester Miller described Israel as a "lifelong advocate" for the community. Israel's family thanked the Macon community for the abundance of love and support as they navigate their loss. Stick with WGXA as we learn more and keep you ready for what's next.
