Georgia EMCs Warning Customers of Latest Scams – 92.1 WLHR

Electric companies, especially EMCs across Georgia, are warning customers of a recent wave of utility scams. The first is called “smishing,” but there are several different types of utility scams. In the case of smishing, a caller poses as an EMC employee, claims your electricity payment is past due, and then threatens you with immediate shut-off unless you pay right away via a prepaid debit card, gift card, or wire transfer. In another, scammers call claiming they received high-bill complaints in your area and offer to conduct an in-home energy audit to gain entry to your home or extract your personal data. Or a scammer will create a fake website that looks like your utility company with a link to pay your electric bill. But if you click on that link and pay your bill that way, you are actually sending money to a scammer and giving away your login and other personal information. Hart EMC, along with EMCs across Georgia, is warning customers that if you suddenly receive a text or email about your electric bill that looks legit but is demanding payment immediately, you should first call Hart EMC’s customer service number toll-free 800-241-4109.
