Sex offender sweep finds dozens of violations in Richmond County

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A five-day law enforcement sweep in Richmond County has found more than 30 sex offenders allegedly violating registration rules. Operation Safe Start was a coordinated push involving the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Department of Community Supervision and the U.S. Marshals Service, along with other agencies. Officers conducted more than 300 compliance checks on registered sex offenders, identifying more than 30 registration violations. Sheriff Eugene Brantley said the operation was aimed at boosting public safety as the new school year begins. “The safety of our children and our community will always be a top priority,” Brantley said. The Marshals Service regularly partners with state and local agencies on similar operations across the country. Nationwide, the agency says it has carried out more than 5,300 sex offender compliance and enforcement operations, helping conduct over 842,000 compliance checks on known sex offenders.
