Clayton County athletics program continues to expand

The Clayton County Public Schools Athletics program is continuing to grow — in participation, facilities and infrastructure and accomplishments. According to numbers presented at the Jan. 12 Clayton County Board of Education meeting, there are about 10,000 student-athletes throughout the school system, about 20% of the current student enrollment. There are currently more than 4,100 high school students participating in 14 sports, more than 3,000 middle school students in eight sports and nearly 2,500 elementary students in five sports, said Clayton County Athletics Executive Director Gary Townsend. The school system is looking to expand its offerings in elementary and middle, especially girls sports, Townsend said. Townsend also highlighted some facilities and infrastructure upgrades — including WiFi at at stadiums, video scoreboards and digital clocks, track resurfacing, lighting upgrades and upgrades to the Tara Stadium locker
